Lush Lomandra

Lush Lomandra

Lomandra is an elegant, evergreen, ornamental clumping grass-like perennial with long, narrow, arching, leaves with clusters of small, creamy yellow flowers in spring to summer.   Also referred to as mat rush or basket grass, this graceful grass adds movement, sound and dimension to your garden.  Depending upon the variety, they range in color from greenish yellow, bright green, blue-gray and variegated green and white blades.  A mix of varieties can add depth and interest to the garden.  They are excellent as accents, in mass plantings, borders, pathways or containers and can be helpful for erosion control on slopes.

Lomandra like full sun to part shade, well-drained loamy soil, regular water and fertilization.  They thrive in our dry summer and wet winter conditions, are drought tolerant, salt tolerant and are considered to be low maintenance.  Cut back or remove dead foliage to neaten appearance throughout the year.  If they become lackluster over time, cut them back to 6-8” from the ground and they will rejuvenate beautifully in form and vigor.  Originally from Australia, they were used by aborigines to make baskets and nets. Many new cultivars we offer were developed in New Zealand.
