Is it too late in the year to plant?

The answer is a resounding NO!  One of the many, wonderful benefits of living in the Bay Area is our temperate climate which allows us to plant perennials, shrubs and trees year-round.  (Caution is advised when planting east of the Berkeley/Oakland hills during summer.) 

You may have heard the very best time of the year to plant is fall.  It is true.  During Fall and Winter dormant plants focus their energy on establishing a robust root system. Also during Winter, you get to take advantage of the seasonal rains to supply the water any newly planted plant needs.  Your plants will experience more robust growth and require less maintenance during the following growing season than if you had waited and planted during an alternate season.   

Nevertheless, many perennials may not be available at the nursery during Fall because of their seasonality.   Fortunately, our cool coastal climate is mild enough that you can be confident planting any time of year.  This allows you to comfortably plant when your desired plants are in season and available.   Watch out for the extreme heat of summer and avoid planting when the temperature is in the 90’s.
